FAFSA is the Free Application for Student Aid. Did you know that the opening date for FAFSA will now be as early as October 2016. What does that mean for you? Well it means that you will not have to wait for your parents to file their tax return because you will be using the tax return filed this past April 2016. Don't fall into the myth of "I won't qualify because.....". There is no reason not to file your FAFSA and send it to all the schools you are considering! It is the old "catch 22" with FAFSA & the Financial Aid at the University/College. There are many State Aid & Private Scholarships that base eligibility on the fact a student DOES NOT already qualify for Federal Aid. School Financial Aid offices are careful not to over "Aid" a student any longer based on the fact "need based" has different meanings and it depends on how the aid (scholarship, grant, etc) is set up.
What can you do to get ready for FAFSA:
1. Get your FAFSA ID and make sure one of your parents has one too.
2. Go to the FAFSA4caster website and use your parents return.....it tells you if you will possibly qualify for federal aid plus it gives you an idea of how FAFSA looks and what info is needed.
HINT: When you fill out the actual FAFSA 2017-2018; use the IRS upload because it will automatically fill in the information for you. This allows for fewer mistakes and less likely to be asked for additional documents.
